UC IRVINE’S JUMPSTART LITERACY FAIR TO BRING BOOKS TO LIFE TO ENCOURAGE

EARLY CHILDHOOD READING ON SATURDAY, MARCH 3 AT HERITAGE MUSEUM IN SANTA ANA

The program works with early childhood educators to reduce achievement gaps for children in underserved communities

Families from across Orange County are expected to attend UC Irvine’s Jumpstart’s free annual Spring Literacy event on Saturday, March 3, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Heritage Museum of Orange County at 3101 W. Harvard St., in Santa Ana. The exciting event supports the development of literacy through STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities, readings from children’s authors, activities such as making your own balloon rocket car, science experiments, and other STEAM related activities to encourage an interest in reading among preschool age children.

Jumpstart will give more than 1,000 free books to children who attend the event. Nurses from Santa Ana Unified School District will be present as well to provide free basic health screenings for children. Children’s author Annie Banannie, who brings stories to life with her unique balloon storytelling, will also be at the event. Continue reading→

Robert Wayne Footwear and Timberland Assist to Restore Heritage Museum of Orange County’s Children’s Garden

Heritage Museum was proud to host a volunteer day with Robert Wayne Footwear and Timberland complete with fruitful gains for their children garden

SANTA ANA, CALIF. – Robert Wayne Footwear and Timberland partnered up with the Heritage Museum of Orange County to restore and rebuild the museum’s children garden. The local organization and many of their employees dedicated several hours of their day to rebuild the garden and purchased vital items to help maintain the garden physically and aesthetically. Robert Wayne Footwear and Timberland efforts included beautification as they purchased plants for the garden and other parts of the natural area of the museum. In addition, they provided the museum with tools to create and raise beds in the farms as well.

The Children Garden is a part of the museum’s natural area which also includes two farms and a swamp. The purpose of the children’s garden often called a “Sensory Garden” by student visitors from Mitchel Development Center is to help develop and mature their sensory skills. Many students at this center are autistic and the garden plays a vital role in enhancing their skills. When the garden is not use for this purpose, school age youth in Pre-K and Kindergarten plant seeds in one of our many educational programs called Change of Seasons. Continue reading→

From Dinosaurs to People: Reliving Orange County’s Past

The Heritage Museum of Orange County in partnership with Dr. John D. Cooper Archaeological and Paleontological Center will host a free event – From Dinosaurs to People: Reliving Orange County’s Past on Sunday, July 19, 2015, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Heritage Museum of Orange County in Santa Ana, CA. Dinosaurs to People will present Orange County’s rich heritage of cultural history, natural history, prehistoric animals and plants, natural habitat, and local Native American history to the community.

Dinosaurs to People will be fun for both young and old, with a number of activities including archaeological and paleontological demonstrations and exhibits, a Junior Scientist Camp featuring educational crafts and hands-on activities. Members of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe and the Juaneno/Acjachemen tribe will be present to share their culture with visitors. Continue reading→

Interim Director of the Heritage Museum, Kevin Cabrera, will give a captivating lecture titled, “Rise of Little Texas, Blacks in Santa Ana” that specifically discusses the growing African-American community in Santa Ana. Parker Kennedy Presentation on Sunday, October 9, 2011, 4:00-5:30 pm at the Heritage Museum of Orange County.

Parker S. Kennedy, Executive Chairman of First American Financial Corporation, will speak at Heritage Museum of Orange County about the role played by First American in the history of Orange County.

Parker is the great-grandson of C. E. Parker, who in 1894 merged the two small title companies serving the newly-independent Orange County to form Orange County Title Company. California Heritage Day event this Sunday, Nov. 14, in Santa Ana

This Sunday, on November 14, celebrate California Heritage Day, a significant event in the history of California, the signing of the 1849 California Constitution, the only bilingual Constitution in the country. The event will take place at Santa Ana’s Heritage Museum of Orange County, from 10 am to 4 pm.

This event commemorates the coming together of all the people who built the great State of California and celebrates the cultural diversity in Orange County and the State of California.

At this exciting event you will experience historic characters who lived in California during that period of history. Hear historical information about the original signers of the Constitution. Experience the culture as it existed at that time. Meet living descendents of the original settlers of Orange County.

There will be food, music, dance, storytellers, re-enactors. Hear old Spanish songs of the time. Talk to Fr. Serra about the DeAnza Expedition into Alta California. Meet the wife of Jose Antonio Yorba and daughter of Don Juan Pablo Grijalva, Maria Josefa Grijalva Yorba. Talk to members of the Native American Tribes. These historical characters and more will share with you the history of the time.

Vendors will be displaying interesting wares and artifacts for sale.
