A DUI suspect crashed into a utility box in Orange

Early Saturday morning, Tustin police officers responded to the area of Newport and Holt regarding calls about a vehicle which had crashed into a structure.

The driver had crashed into a utility box, was unconscious behind the wheel, and was still actively accelerating forwards.

The responding police officers quickly devised a plan to trap the vehicle in its place and prevent injury to other motorists or further damage to property.

With the assistance from OCFA firefighters, the male driver was safely removed from the vehicle without risking emergency personnel to injury from possible electrocution.

The male suspect was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence and booked at Orange County Jail.

The Santa Ana Police Department will be conducting a DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint on Friday, July 29th, 2022. It will begin at 7:00 PM and is scheduled to conclude at 2:00 AM.

The primary purpose of a DUI Checkpoint is to deter impaired driving, not to increase arrests. All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI / Driver’s License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as ensuring drivers have a valid driver’s license. The DMV reports that unlicensed drivers are 4.9 times more likely to cause a fatal crash than a licensed driver is.

The checkpoint will be staffed by officers trained in the detection of alcohol and drug impairment to provide on-the-spot assessments of drivers suspected of alcohol or drug impairment. All checkpoints are conducted in accordance with the guidelines for DUI checkpoint operations outlined in the California Supreme Court decision, Ingersoll v. Palmer.

All vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and / or drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and / or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver. Funding for this operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A suspected DUI driver ran his truck into a transient and killed him, in Orange

On 07/23/22, at 8:23 p.m., Jose Antonio Cisneros Segura, a 45-year-old from Anaheim, was driving a 1966 GMC pickup truck south in the 100 block of North Feldner Road. Segura lost control of the vehicle and struck a male transient, 64-year-old Gary Tripe, who had been sitting on the sidewalk.

Tripe was declared deceased at the scene.

Segura fled in his truck and was located by patrol officers a short time later in the 200 block of north Donneybrooke Street.

Segura displayed objective symptoms of intoxication. He was arrested and booked into Orange County Jail for Gross Vehicular Manslaughter, Felony Hit & Run, Felony DUI Causing Death, and Driving Unlicensed.

O.C. woman gets 21 years to life in prison after a fatal DUI crash that orphaned three kids

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A 23-year-old woman plead guilty today to two felony counts of murder for killing a young mother and father and seriously injuring their three young daughters while driving under the influence in December 2020. The family was driving around Newport Beach looking at Christmas lights when they were hit by a car that ran a red light at 75 miles per hour.

The driver, Grace Elizabeth Coleman, 23, of Newport Beach had a blood alcohol level of .22% and left the scene of the collision, leaving the injured children strapped in their car seats with the bodies of their parents. Coleman also refused to take a blood alcohol content test as required by law.

In addition to the two murder counts, Coleman, also pled guilty to one felony count of driving under the influence of alcohol causing bodily injury, one felony count of driving with a blood alcohol of .08% or more causing bodily injury, and one felony count of hit and run with injury. Coleman plead guilty to three felony enhancements of great bodily injury for causing injuries to all three of the couple’s daughters and one misdemeanor count of driving with a blood alcohol of .08% or more in connection with an August 29, 2020 arrest in Laguna Beach. She admitted having a blood alcohol of .18% at the time of the August 29, 2020 arrest, which was 3 1/2 months before she killed Gabriel Andrade and her husband Henry Saldana-Mejia.

Coleman pleaded guilty in exchange for a court offer of 21 years to life. She faced a maximum sentence of 42 years and eight months to life in state prison. She is scheduled to be sentenced on July 29, 2022 at the Harbor Justice Center in Department H2.

Gabriela Andrade, 28, and her husband, Henry Saldana-Mejia, 27, were driving with their three daughters, ages 1, 4, and 5, near the intersection of Pelican Hill Road and Newport Coast Drive on December 8, 2020. At approximately 7:46 p.m. Coleman is accused of running a red light and crashing into the family’s vehicle, killing both parents and seriously injuring their three daughters who were secured in car seats.

Andrade and Saldana-Mejia were killed and their three daughters were seriously injured in the collision.

Driving around looking at Christmas lights shouldn’t have ended in tragedy, but three young girls are orphans because of the selfish decision of a stranger,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “Drinking and driving has real life consequences – and those little girls are going to have to live with those consequences the rest of their lives because someone they never met decided to get behind the wheel of a car while drunk and kill their parents.”

Senior Deputy District Attorney Jennifer Walker of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting this case.

SANTA ANA, Calif. – A man who was driving with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit when he hit and killed a 6-year-old girl who was playing on the sidewalk was convicted today of the girl’s murder. The driver had already been charged in a 2015 driving under the influence case in which he had been warned of the deadly dangers of driving under the influence.

Maximino Delgado Lagunas, 56, of Anaheim, was found guilty by a jury of one felony count of second-degree murder. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life.

Lagunas is scheduled to be sentenced on September 9, 2022 at the North Justice Center in Fullerton in Department N11.

On February 17, 2018, Lagunas left a job site where he had been working as a painter. Lagunas lost control of his vehicle, drove onto the opposite sidewalk, hitting 6-year-old Grace Aguilar and eventually a parked car. Grace died as a result of her injuries.

Toxicology results revealed Lagunas was driving with a blood alcohol level of .22%, more than three times California’s legal limit of .08%

Drivers arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in California can be given what is known as a Watson advisement that informs them that if they kill someone while driving under the influence they can be charged with murder. Lagunas received the Watson advisement in connection with his 2015 conviction for driving under the influence.

“An innocent little girl who was just playing on the sidewalk is dead as a result of the selfish decision by a stranger to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated,” said Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer. “This is a tragedy that should never have happened and Grace should still be alive today. Every time someone drives under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they take the risk that they could kill someone. And this time he did – and it was a little six-year-old girl named Grace.”

Senior Deputy District Attorney Jeff Moore of the Homicide Unit is prosecuting this case.

A driver crashed his pickup truck into a home in Orange on Friday night

On Friday night at 10:45 p.m., a 55-year-old male from Villa Park was driving east on Katella in an F-250 when he sideswiped another vehicle. This caused the truck to lose the front passenger side wheel, which caused the truck to veer off the roadway and collide into the front of a residence in the 2400 block of E. Katella.

Fortunately, the residents inside the home were not injured, but the house sustained major structural damage and the gas meter was damaged.

Orange City Fire responded, shut off the gas, stabilized the structure, and red-tagged it.

The driver was arrested for DUI and transported to a local hospital. Traffic on Katella Ave. was closed for approximately 2.5 hours while OFD was on scene.

A suspected DUI driver slammed into ten cars in Orange on Friday night

A suspected drunk driver was arrested on Friday night after he lost control of his vehicle as he drove on East Lincoln Avenue, in Orange, and then proceeded to crash into nine parked cars before he drove back onto the road and hit a Toyota Prius that was passing by.

The suspected DUI driver, a 32-year-old man, was trapped in his car for a while after the crashes and had to be rescued by firefighters. He was however then arrested and taken into custody.

The alleged DUI driver was not badly injured in the incident.

The Orange Police are investigating the incident.

The average cost of a DUI in California ranges from $10 to 12K. The suspect will however also likely be facing several auto liability claims and could also be sued by the occupants of the Toyota Prius.

DUI drivers, if convicted, also lose their driving privileges.

Two men attacked an Orange liquor store employee, stole booze and fled in a Mercedes-Benz

On 05/22/22, at approximately 7:45 p.m., two suspects entered a liquor store in the 400 block of west Lincoln Ave. Once inside, the two suspects picked out numerous bottles of alcohol and started to leave the store without paying.

An employee attempted to stop the suspects as they were exiting the store. The suspects assaulted the employee, threw him to the ground, and fled in a silver Mercedes-Benz.

On April 23, 2022, the Irvine Police Department will conduct a Driving Under the Influence and Driver’s License checkpoint in the area of Sand Canyon Ave. and Trabuco Rd. The checkpoint will be clearly marked and operational from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m.

This checkpoint is being carried out with the use of grant funding awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Irvine Police Department works every day to reduce the number of people injured and killed by impaired drivers. If you observe a drunk driver, please call 9-1-1.
