Failed Santa Ana mayoral candidate Alfredo Amezcua’s Political Action Committee, which he calls the “Santa Ana Coalition for Better Government,” (SACBG) has sent out a bizarre email asking its members to show up to Tuesday night’s Santa Ana City Council meeting in protest of Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez while at the same [...]

Santa Ana artist and musician Theo Hirsch unloaded on the Republicans and fake liberals who have been attacking Santa Ana Mayor Pro Tem Claudia Alvarez this week, in a hard hitting post on his blog.  Here are a few excerpts:
After a ton of local controversy because council woman Claudia Alvares had the balls to Call [...]

Is Downtown Santa Ana losing its Latino culture?

Burning Mexicans out of Santa Ana

Don Cribb?
Santa Ana’s Nimby Usual Suspects are quick to scream that something is historical whenever their institutions are threatened.  And then they sue.  They did that when dilapidated housing in the proposed Station District was threatened and they are doing it again now that folks are talking about bringing the Chivas USA soccer team to [...]

Some Latino shop owners at the Fiesta Marketplace back Irv Chase

Charlie's Tatttoo

For weeks now I have been reading that all of the Latino business owners at the Fiesta Marketplace are mad at their landlord, Irv Chase.  But when I went to the Cinco de Mayo festival in Santa Ana, which was held in the same area as the Fiesta Marketplace, I spoke to a few of [...]

Bud Light Lime Girls at Cinco De Mayo

My fourteen year old son and I jumped on the OCTA Route 53 bus today and headed down to the 2011 Santa Ana Cinco de Mayo festival, which continues on Sunday, May 1.  The bus was packed with others who were headed to the event.
I have been to a lot of these events over the [...]

Why not give Dennis Lluy and the new Yost Theater a chance?

Yost Logo

It has been a long, expensive road, but Dennis Lluy is set to open the newly renovated Yost Theater in April of this year, according to his website.  The Chase family, who own the Yost, are adding a restaurant and bar service to the historic venue, under Lluy’s direction.
One would think this would be a [...]

Downtown businesses need to support the Station District

The problems that are being incurred by the downtown businesses can’t be blamed on Downtown Inc., the restaurant association, Mike Harrah or the PBID. The problems they are incurring are being caused by a lack of consumers shopping in their businesses.

Romero wanted to talk about the [...]

How can we revive Santa Ana’s downtown?

Santa Ana’s downtown is a ghost town at night, but should it be?
Have you visited downtown Brea, Fullerton or Huntington Beach recently?  All three of those areas are absolutely jam-packed most evenings.  Why is Santa Ana’s downtown so moribund by comparison?
I visited the Art Walk at the Artists Village last night and it was great [...]
