Saddleback High School student Jose Perez was the lucky winner yesterday of the SAUSD’s perfect attendance car giveaway, which took place at Bruce Hamlin’s Guaranty Chevrolet, located at 711 East 17th Street in Santa Ana. Perez won a 2017 Chevy Sonic.

There were 733 eligible high school students in the contest during which five names were drawn. Then the five students each picked one of five cars that they believed might be the winning vehicle. The student whose key was able to start the car won that vehicle – and that turned out to be Perez. Continue reading→

SADDLEBACK STUDENT’S ARTWORK TO BE DISPLAYED IN U.S. CAPITOL

Linda Yanez, a photography student at Saddleback High School, has won First Place in the Congressional Photography contest sponsored by Congressman Lou Correa representing the 46th Congressional District. The award ceremony was held May 20, 2017 at the Cal State Fullerton Grand Central exhibition space on Second Street in Santa Ana.

Linda is a 10th grade student who created the work, “Barrio Logan: Remembering the Fallen.” The photograph depicts the commemorative community mural in the Logan neighborhood. Linda and her parents will be honored at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington D.C. at a ceremony on June 29, 2017 and the work will be hung in a gallery/corridor setting in the Capitol Building along with student artwork from other U.S. Congressional Districts. Gangbanger with past felony convictions pleads guilty to causing a police pursuit in Santa Ana

Manuel Burciaga, a 42-year-old man sentenced last month to 31 years to life in prison for a gang-related fatal shooting in Santa Ana two decades ago pleaded guilty this Tuesday to triggering the police chase that led him to face justice for the 1993 murder, according to the O.C. Register.

Burciaga admitted to numerous felony charges including evading police, possession of a firearm by a felon, participating in gang activity and possession of a gun in a school zone. His sentence will also be enhanced as he also admitted to allegations of gang activities. he is set to be sentenced on Aug. 18. Continue reading→

Man shot in the leg near Saddleback High School

A man was shot at several times today at round 3:05 pm, near the intersection of Central and Rosewood avenues, in Santa Ana. One of the bullets struck him in one of his legs, according to the SAPD, as reported by the O.C. Register.

Witnesses were not sure if the man who shot the victim was on foot or if he fled in a vehicle. Continue reading→

Saddleback High School student injured in a gang-related drive by shooting

The latest gang-related drive-by shooting in Santa Ana targeted two Saddleback High School students who are known to be gang members. One boy was walking while another student was on a bicyle, as they traveled south on Baker Street, near West Alton Avenue on Wednesday afternoon. A vehicle pulled up at around 2:55 pm and several shots were fired, according to the O.C. Register.

The boy who was on foot was shot in the neck and shoulder. He was lucky – he escaped with non-life threatening injuries. No one else was injured. Continue reading→

Santa Ana Grads Give Back to SAUSD Community by Riding Across America

HEALTHNUTS AND HANDLEBARS TEAM COMPETES IN TOUR DE CALIFORNIA RACE TRAINING FOR CROSS-COUNTRY TREK

Anthony Bui, his sister Aileen, and girlfriend Hannah Pham, otherwise known as Healthnuts and Handlebars, have been on a serious training regimen to prepare themselves for their upcoming three-month bicycle trek on the TransAmerica Trail from Oregon to Virginia.

Both Bui siblings are graduates of Saddleback High School, while Pham is a graduate of Fountain Valley High School. All three are college graduates who wanted to make the trip before attending professional post-graduate schools in healthcare fields. Community Alert: Free Household Hazardous Waste Collection for Santa Ana Residents

SANTA ANA, CA (March 5, 2014) – On Saturday, March 8, 2014, the City of Santa Ana is sponsoring a free Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event at Saddleback High School. Residents may transport up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per visit. Proof of residency is required utilizing a California driver’s license, water bill, or utility bill. HHW materials are toxic. Please transport them carefully and refer to the attached graphic for a list of accepted items.

Santa Ana Unified School District Announces Completion of the Largest Solar Project in Orange County

SANTA ANA, CA — October 27, 2010 — The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) announces the completion of a solar and energy efficiency project at Saddleback High School. This is the largest solar project of its kind in all of Orange County. On Saturday, October 30 at 11:00 a.m., officials of the Santa Ana Unified School District will “Flip the Switch” on an 800 kilowatt rooftop solar energy system. This newly installed solar system will supply the high school with about 75 percent of its electrical needs.

The $5.8 million solar project will dramatically reduce the school’s carbon foot print, create jobs and provide the school district $3 million in energy cost savings over the next five years, according to Joe Dixon, Assistant Superintendent for Facilities. That would free up an estimated $600,000 a year that can be applied to the school district’s general fund.

“We are proud to produce a project with dual results: energy savings to the District and an opportunity to educate our students about the benefits of renewable energy and green technology,” said Dr. Audrey Yamagata-Noji, President of the SAUSD Board of Education.

The project also involved replacing the entire roof and air conditioning units with new energy efficient systems. Additional support for the solar project came from Chevron Energy Solutions that designed, engineered and constructed the solar and energy efficiency improvements. The total project cost was $12.5 million with funding from a variety of sources, including Federal stimulus funding, State Emergency Repair funds, and Measure G — a local general obligation bond approved in 2008 by nearly 69% of the voters.

In addition to the energy savings, the project will have an educational component. An informational kiosk at the school will provide students with informational updates and inform students about the advantages of renewable energy and the more than 1,000 tons of carbon that the clean energy system will eliminate each year from the environment.

The public is invited to help school district officials activate the pioneering solar system at Saddleback High School, 2802 South Flower Street in Santa Ana on October 30 at 11:00 a.m. An Environmental Expo will be held after the dedication. Free electronics recycling will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

My son James has joined the new Navy Junior ROTC program at Godinez High School!

My son James, who is 14 years old, just joined the Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) at Godinez High School today! I am so proud of him!

The NJROTC’s mission is to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.
