The attack on a woman who exited the Proof Bar in DTSA early on Sunday morning has blown up – it has been covered on CNN and has appeared in newspapers as far away as London. One of our readers posted that the victim of the attack was not from Santa Ana.
An unidentified man assaulted an apparently inebriated 26-year old woman at the stairwell of the Copper Door in Downtown Santa Ana, early on Sunday morning, May 21, 2017, according to the O.C. Register.
The SAPD released surveillance footage today of the attack, in an attempt to get leads on the suspect. Why they waited this long to release the footage is a very good question. Were they trying to protect the Proof Bar from what is sure to be a damaging hit to their image? Continue reading
UPDATE: The Santa Ana Planning Commision voted 4-2 to approve the ordinance discussed below. Eric Alderete and Patrick Yrarrazaval were opposed. Sean Mill and Frank Acosta made and seconded the successful motion.
Santa Ana’s Planning Commission will be considering a proposed ordinance tonight, No. 2012-03, which will establish an Entertainment Permit that will be issued by the Santa Ana Police Department to local businesses that provide entertainment while also serving alcohol.
The main concern, as I understand it, is ensuring that nightclubs and restaurants in town are not allowing minors, 18 and under, in their establishments when alcohol is being served. Some of these venues, such as the Velvet Lounge, aggressively advertise the presense of 18 year old youngsters, ostensibly as a way to market to older clients who are trolling for youthful partners. The Yost Theater does this as well. Continue reading

Santa Ana Police Department Advisory: SANTA ANA POLICE- HOMICIDE DETECTIVES ARREST TWO FOR THE 2010 MURDER OF JEFFREY LEE CHUNG
SANTA ANA POLICE- HOMICIDE DETECTIVES ARREST TWO FOR THE 2010 MURDER OF JEFFREY LEE CHUNG
On 10-2-2010, a robber shot and killed a 23-year-old man in a Santa Ana parking garage. Irvine resident Jeffrey Lee Chung was at a bar with some friends in downtown Santa Ana and walking to a parking garage, when he and a friend were confronted by two suspects, one of them armed with a handgun.
Chung was shot when he refused the suspects’ demand for money. Chung’s friend was unharmed. The suspects, described as male Hispanics, fled the scene on foot. Officers responding to a “shots fired, man down” call about 1:30 a.m., at 201 W. Third Street, found Chung shot in the upper torso. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. A Cover Charge at Proof? No bueno!
UPDATE: Santa Ana City Manager Paul Walters sent me an email today confirming that the City is looking into the issues raised in this post!
Chapter One: the Modern Local, a restaurant in Downtown Santa Ana, is promising a fun night tonight, which includes dancing – as per their Facebook event page. However, I am told that their Conditional Use Permit (C.U.P.) does NOT allow dancing. As far as I know, they did not petition the Santa Ana Planning Agency for an exception.
You may recall that one of the owners of Chapter One went off on Mexican owned businesses in Downtown Santa Ana, a few months ago, when he questioned the number of Quinceanera stores in the Downtown area. Well, I guarantee you that none of those shops will be flouting the law tonight! Continue reading
The Santa Ana Planning Commission is considering new rules for Downtown Santa Ana bars – and several of the more controversial bar owners and other Downtown Santa Ana gadflyes showed up at this evening’s meeting to speak up in support of a proposed expansion sought by Proof Bar.
You may recall that Proof owner Joey Mendes got ripped by the OC Weekly a few months ago when he refused to allow a member of a band that was set to play at his bar to enter his establishment, because the poor guy was using a Matricular Consular card as I.D. Mendes was there tonight as well. Continue reading

Main Gallery-The Curiosities of Janice Lowry
The Curiosities of Janice Lowry is a retrospective exhibition that will feature more than 100 artworks including; assemblage, collage, painting, drawing and personal collections. In 2007 OC Weekly named Lowry the region’s best visual artist, praising her assemblages generated from found objects. Lowry is best known for her assemblages, which she described as a way to solve the problem of expensive framing, and for her journals she drew, painted, and collaged for over 30 years. In October of 2007 all of Lowry’s journals, future journals and papers pertaining to her art career were accepted into the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Archives of American Art in Washington D.C. In April 2009 Lowry was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. She faced the finality of her future in the same way she faced everyday of her life. September 20, 2009 she succumb to the disease at age 63.
Book Release: A beautiful 256-page full-color hardbound standard and special-edition retrospective book will be available for purchase during the exhibition. This publication will include over two hundred works of construction, sculpture, and collage with essays by Jon Gothold, Mike McGee, Mark Ryden, and Joanna Roche.
Texas-based artist Bale Creek Allen will be the next artist-in-residence at Grand Central Art Center. Allen grew up in Fresno, California, but now resides in Austin, Texas. Fresno and Texas, particularly Lubbock where his father is from, have strong influences on Allen’s art. He has been inspired by tumbleweeds, tire treads, and roadkill. As part of his residency Allen will exhibit sculptures from his Empire series in the GCAC Project Room. Empire consists of bronzed objects most of which evoke the feel of Americana: stars, stripes, lone ranger mask, and paper planes. Other objects are a reflection of Allen’s environment: tire treads, and taxidermy rattlesnakes.Allen has an impressive artistic pedigree and works in many different media: painting, drawing, wood work, bronze, ceramics, photography, film, writing, acting, playing drums, and singing. His parents are visual artist and songwriter Terry Allen, and actress Jo Harvey Allen.
Book Release: Grand Central Art Center is publishing a catalog featuring artworks from the Empire series and an essay from Michael Solway.
