Santa Ana’s Tristan Pacheco was selected to play in the USA National team Development games. This is an invite only event and he was selected based on his performance at the USA regional Development Camp where he had to earn his spot competing against high school kids because there weren’t many kids in his age group.
On Monday, May 19 at 10 a.m., MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate School in Santa Ana will host a special assembly with Buena Park-based Yamaha Corp. of America, to celebrate the school’s recent win of a $5,000 musical instrument prize package in Yamaha’s Quest for Music Education online contest. MacArthur is one of eight schools to win the contest nationwide out of 1,600 that entered.
MacArthur is a high-achieving school despite the fact that many of its students come from underprivileged homes. Indeed, the school community marshaled an impressive degree of student, teacher and parent involvement to succeed in the Quest for Music Education contest, which awarded prizes based on the level of participation by each school.
Educators at MacArthur chose a viola, a cello and a euphonium to enhance the school’s musical offerings. (A euphonium is the second-lowest pitched brass instrument after the tuba.) Guess who swept the Orange County Academic Pentathlon this year? Santa Ana’s own MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate! Their two 8th grade teams took first AND second place overall and Mac’s only 7th grade team took first place!
Overall, over 54 individual medals were won as well.

SAUSD Recognizes Top Parents for Involvement and Commitment to Education
SANTA ANA, CA – Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) has chosen the following top three as Parents of the Year in recognition of their involvement, commitment and dedication to the educational process. Honorees include:
Carmen Serrano – Romero-Cruz Elementary ~ Mrs. Serrano demonstrates active participation in all school functions. She has organized the snack store, has participated in various parent trainings, and is a member of the English Learner Advisory Committee and Parent Teacher Organization. She has been a “key” to the parental involvement success at school.
Olga Guillén – MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate ~ Mrs. Guillén is a member of the Parent Faculty Organization, School Site Council, and the English Learner Advisory Committee. She has assisted with Back-to-School Night, Open House, 8th Grade Promotion Committee and 6th Grade Orientation.
Scott Duncan – Middle College High School ~ Mr. Duncan is the PTSA (Parent Teachers Student Association) President. He provides direction, guidance and laughter, which make volunteering a pleasure. Additionally, he has raised funds to support 10 eleventh grade students who could not afford to pay for the PSAT.
