The OC Weekly’s Editor, Gustavo Arellano, got married to local business owner Delilah Snell yesterday in Downtown Santa Ana.

As one might imagine Gustavo’s friends were there for him and Delilah including culinary all-stars Roland Rubalcava, who provided tortas ahogadas/fideo seco, Carlos Salgado, who served aguachile, and Bricia Lopez and Fernando Marcos Lopez who brought a Michelada VW bus to the wedding. And famous DJ Richard Blade was their spinning New Wave music along with DJ Yellow Blackbird who played cumbias.

Martinez was on TV with Tran, but Arellano does TV with Republicans too

You have to love Gustavo Arellano’s hyperbole. He reported this week that “I about spit out my Maker’s this evening when word came to me that SanTana councilwoman and 69th Assembly District hopeful Michele Martinez appeared on a Vietnamese-language channel here in Little Saigon, getting softball questions tossed at her by none other than former State Assembly member Van Thai Tran. Tran, the man who has long trashed Mexicans and tried to pit Vietnamese and Mexican voters against each other in a strategy only neo-Nazis and the Republican Party could love. Tran, the sworn enemy of Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez.”

Since when is Gustavo a Sanchez acolyte? She is the biggest phony ever. She was a Republican for most of her life before she switched to the Democratic Party, only after she got blown out in a race for the Anaheim City Council. Sanchez not only switched parties, she also dropped her married name, which at the time was “Brixey,” and rediscovered her Latina surname, “Sanchez.” Continue reading→

No Gustavo, Michele Martinez and I did not sell out to Miguel Pulido

The OC Weekly’s Gustavo Arellano is a huge fan of far-left Democrat Julio Perez – one of four Democrats vying for the 69th Assembly District. That’s fine. What is not cool is Gustavo’s continued allegation that Santa Ana Council Woman Michele Martinez “sold out” to Santa Ana Mayor Miguel Pulido. That is not just untrue – it is complete B.S.

The reality is that Martinez was elected to Ward 2 on the Santa Ana City Council by running AGAINST Pulido’s handpicked candidate, the useless Tino Rivera (a Republican who switched to the Democratic Party for that race). That was a tough race – Martinez was unknown and vastly underfunded. The other candidates included a Com Link Board Member, Evangeline Gawronski, who ran a credible campaign; a candidate, Tish Leon, who took out a loan on her house; and Rivera. Martinez punked them all, garnering 32.6% of the vote, according to Smart Voter.

Think about it – Martinez began her career in politics by taking out Pulido’s handpicked lame candidate. This is a sell out? Really? Continue reading→

The Yost Theater opens in grand style but Gustavo can’t let go of the past

The historic Yost Theater finally reopened for business last night, an hour late, to a large crowd that patiently lined up outside while getting their I.D. bracelets.

I stopped by at about 9:30 pm and had a chance to speak with Dave Leon, one of their owners. Leon has been working on opening not only the Yost but also the Velvet Lounge. I thought he might be quite frazzled, having spent all Saturday trying to get everything done to the satisfaction of the City of Santa Ana’s Planning Department. But Leon was just relieved, more than anything else, and he had to be happy to see how many folks came to the Yosts’ grand opening. Continue reading→

Does mayoral candidate Charles Hart miss the days when there were less Mexicans in Santa Ana?

Gustavo Arellano wrote a great post over at the O.C. Weekly’s Navel Gazing blog wondering what Republican Santa Ana mayoral candidate Charles Hart meant when he stated in his press release that “I am running for Mayor to help restore Santa Ana to its greatness.”

Here are a few excerpts from Arellano’s post. Be sure to click here to read the whole post! In the post Arellano cites numerous instances of old-time Usual Suspects decrying the condition of Santa Ana – back in the same time Hart is referring to!

”I was born and raised in Santa Ana,” Hart writes on his campaign website, “and I remember what Santa Ana was like when the streets were safe enough for kids to play on, our downtown was a fun place for families to visit and shop on the weekend, and the schools were considered a great place to get a good education.”

Hmm…no families shop anymore in downtown SanTana, Charles? Go to Calacas on Fourth Street right now, and betcha it’ll be filled with families. And the city’s streets emptied of kiddies running around? When?

What Hart really means is that he remembers whenMexicans weren’t around in the numbers that they are today, and thinks those days were the ones when his hometown was “great.” He can deny my analysis all he wants, but the fact is Hart is merely repeating the mantra others have maintained for decades, a mantra that upon close study reveals that the eternal aching of city leaders and others for SanTana’s supposedly glorious past is actually a yearning for a white-man’s town.

Is SanTana perfect? No. Can it improve? Of course. But I’d argue the city is already great,Register commentators (and even some pendejos here) notwithstanding, and can only get better. For Hart and others to cling to a revanchist agenda shows that either they don’t know their SanTana history and thus have no idea what they wish for, or just don’t like living in a city with too many Mexicans, just like the city’s bigoted residents of yore.
