video cameras on policemen

Police officers from the SAPD will apparently be discussing the possible use of body cameras on SAPD officers at the City Council’s Public Safety and Neighborhood Improvement Committee meeting tonight at 5:30 pm, at the conference room 1600 that is located inside the City Hall Ross Annex, at 20 Civic Center Plaza, according to the O.C. Register.

There have been a slew of officer-involved shootings over the past month – just as gang violence has also been rising throughout the city.

Body cameras for police have already been approved in the Cities of Fullerton and Anaheim.

It has been estimated that putting body cameras on our police will cost $1 million. The SAPD has requested a $700,000 Federal grant to pay for an exploratory group that will be considering the body cameras and to pay for a pilot body camera program.

Protesters have been frothing at the mouth since a man suspected of robbing a Latina grandmother was shot by the police.  This Sunday the FTP crowd marched illegally through our streets and encouraged children to hit pinatas shaped like pigs and marked “SAPD.”
