Buena Park Police News Release

The holiday season is here, and with it comes a reminder from the Buena Park Police Department: celebrate responsibly and never drive impaired. Starting December 12 through New Year’s Day, Buena Park officers will increase patrols and conduct additional enforcement as part of the National “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1,038 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in December 2023 alone. The goal of this campaign is simple—keep impaired drivers off the road and prevent tragedies during the holidays.

“Not only is driving impaired illegal, but it is also dangerous and never acceptable,” said Sergeant Conner Lee. “We want to make sure everyone gets home safely so they can celebrate the holiday season with loved ones.”

The department urges everyone to plan ahead:

  • Designate a sober driver.
  • Use public transportation or rideshare services.
  • Never get behind the wheel if you’ve been drinking or using drugs.

Impairment isn’t just caused by alcohol. Prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, cannabis products, and illegal drugs can all affect your ability to drive safely. Even legal marijuana cannot be used before driving—DUI laws apply to all impairing substances.

If you see someone who appears impaired behind the wheel, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Funding for this program is provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

  • Plan Ahead: Arrange a designated driver or rideshare before you start celebrating.
  • Know Your Medications: Some prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs can impair driving.
  • Stay Overnight: If you’re away from home, consider staying the night instead of driving.
  • Watch Out for Others: If you see someone impaired, help them find a safe ride or call 9-1-1 if they attempt to drive.
  • Celebrate Responsibly: Enjoy the season without putting lives at risk.
