CHP officers responded to a car-to-car shooting on the southbound 57 Freeway north of Pathfinder Road at around 11 p.m. yesterday. The incident resulted in lane closures and heavy traffic that continued this morning.

The shooting victims were in a white sedan. There were three victims in that vehicle including a female driver and two passengers. The rear male passenger died, the driver was not hurt and the front female passenger was injured but is expected to survive.

The victims, for reasons unknown, ended up driving all the way to Costa Mesa after the shooting. The vehicle was found stopped in a residential area in Costa Mesa just off the 55 Freeway.

The CHP also reported that another vehicle was hit by gunfire. That vehicle is thought to be a pickup that was caught in the crossfire and ended up stopped in the City of Brea.

The good news is that no one in that second vehicle was hurt. Investigators believe the shootings are related.

The CHP identified the suspect vehicle as a dark-colored SUV however they have not released the make and model. It is also not known why the suspects opened fire.
