Our readers selected Sarah Rafael Garcia, an author and the founder of the Barrio Writers program, as our 2010 Woman of the Year.  This month the Orange County Department of Education followed suit as they honored her with an Outstanding Contribution to Education Award, which was presented to her by OCDE Trustee Long Pham.

The Barrio Writers is a creative-writing program that encourages students to grow through exposure to the cultural arts and the written word, according to the O.C. Register.

The Outstanding Contributions to Education Awards Program recognizes the contributions of individuals, groups, and organizations whose unique efforts have impacted the education of Orange County students. Awards are presented at the Orange County Board of Education meetings, followed by a reception for honorees and guests.

You can buy the Barrio Writers book at Santa Ana’s Calacas.  Click here to visit their website.  And you can sign up for Garcia’s email list by clicking here.

  1. Has anybody approached this fine citizen to talk about aspirations of becoming Mayor of Santa Ana? The Pulido Machine better get on it, especially if they are convinced that the “Los Amigos Press Conference” was orchestrated by the Amescua machine. Guess who was at that Los Amigos press conference? You guessed it. members of “Barrio Writers!” Peace.

    1. I am sorry to hear that some of the Barrio Writers were snookered by Amezcua, who lied to the voters when he ran for the Rancho College Board. As we have reported, he did not live in the area he ran for. He got caught and had to resign. That is the extent of his work in education.

I don’t know if Sarah lives in town or if she has an interest in politics. I think that would be a mis-use of her abilities. She does such a great job being exactly who she is and doing what she does best, which is not politics.

  2. I like your summary of the best use of her talent (maybe). That begs the question. What talented people are best suited to become politicians?
