SAPD police officers arrested an armed robber who stole jewelry and a cell phone from a victim

Police officers responded to a robbery near Greenville St. & St. Gertrude Pl., where a victim reported being robbed of a gold chain and phone by an armed suspect, according to the SAPD.

The victim provided updates to SAPD Dispatch, helping the police officers to locate the suspect, who had fled on foot and ran into the backyard of a home on W. Central Ave.

The police officers quickly contained the area, and the suspect surrendered without incident.

The weapon was recovered, and the suspect was booked on multiple felony charges.

Great teamwork by the SAPD patrol officers and the victim who positively identified the suspect!

In California, the penalties for committing armed robbery and then evading the police are quite severe:

  1. Armed Robbery: Under California Penal Code § 211, robbery is defined as the felonious taking of personal property from another person by means of force or fear. If a firearm is used, it significantly increases the severity of the crime. The penalties for armed robbery can include:
    • First-degree robbery: 3, 4, or 6 years in state prison. If committed in an inhabited structure with two or more accomplices, the sentence can be 3, 6, or 9 years.
    • Second-degree robbery: 2, 3, or 5 years in state prison.
  2. Evading Police: Under California Vehicle Code § 2800.2, evading a police officer while driving recklessly is a serious offense. The penalties can include:
    • Misdemeanor: Up to 1 year in county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.
    • Felony: 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years in state prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.

Combining these offenses can lead to substantial prison time and fines.
