Poverty, Hunger Plagues Many Local Families

A study by the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) found that nearly one in five Americans struggled with a ‘food hardship’ last year. Food hardship was measured as those people who responded affirmatively to the question, “Have there been times in the past twelve months when you did not have enough money to buy food that you or your family needed?”

In 2011, FRAC’s analysis for the nation as a whole shows that 18.6 percent of respondents reported food hardship last year, the highest rate since 2008.

John Bisnar, founder of Bisnar | Chase Personal Injury Attorneys, LLP, says this is the seventh time his firm has teamed up with Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, a cause he says is critical in tough economic times.

“There’s no reason whatsoever why people in this country, why people right here in our community, should ever go hungry,” said Bisnar. “It’s our mission to help those less fortunate while educating local businesses how far even the smallest contribution can go in feeding dozens or even hundreds of families. Knowing people don’t have to go to bed hungry is the reason why we do this — bottom line.”

Individuals who would like to distribute food at Saturday’s event are asked to email Danielle Olson of Bisnar | Chase at dolson@bisnarchase.com. Businesses who would like to sponsor food giveaways are asked to visit the Second Harvest Food Bank website at http://www.FeedOC.org to learn how to donate funds, food and/or time.
