The family and friends of Edwin Fuentes, the U.S. Army Veteran whose life was cut short on May 16, 2017, in Tustin when the police opened fire on him, are trying to raise money to pay for his funeral. On May 16, 2017, at approximately 7:12 p.m., Tustin Police Department Officers responded to a call of a suicidal subject.
Officers contacted the subject, 24-year-old Edwin Fuentes, who served in the U.S. Army in Afghanistan and later struggled with PTSD, inside of a vehicle in the alley of an apartment complex located in the 16200 Block of Main St. in the City of Tustin, just south of the Santa Ana Zoo, according to the O.C. At 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 29, more than 3,500 individuals will gather at the “From Sea to Shining Sea” Memorial Day service to pay tribute to fallen service members. The 25th annual event will include inspirational speeches from veterans, a performance of the National Anthem by Santa Margarita High freshman Isabelle Freeman, an honor guard, an aerial flyover of World War II-era planes by Memorial Flights, music by OC Sound and the Orange County Concert Band and a white dove release. SANTA ANA – OneOC, in collaboration with the City of Santa Ana, the County of Orange, and various veterans organizations, will be hosting “Stand UP for Veterans”, an event that offers free services to veterans, at the Santa Ana Stadium on Thursday, April 20, 2017, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.
The “Stand UP for Veterans” program, originally inspired by the military term “Stand Down”, provides an opportunity for veterans to achieve a brief respite from the streets and immediately access needed services. Veterans will assemble in a base camp model that will include showers, meals, clothing, hygiene care kits, medical and legal advice, and veteran benefit information, employment services, in a safe and supportive environment including veteran peer navigators. This supportive housing assistance is provided through the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by the VA. GOODWILL OF ORANGE COUNTY AWARDED $25,000 GRANT FROM BANK OF AMERICA TO SERVE O.C. VETERANS
Funds will further Goodwill’s Tierney Center for Veteran Services, resources for vets and their families, including job placement and housing assistance
SANTA ANA, Calif. — June 16, 2016 – Goodwill of Orange County announced today it has been awarded a $25,000 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to invest in its Thomas T. & Elizabeth C. Tierney Center for Veteran Services, Orange County’s new all-in-one resource for veterans living in Orange County and their families.
This grant by Bank of America will allow Goodwill to expand its comprehensive approach to serving local warriors and their families and conduct outreach to reach more of the local veteran population. The funds also help fulfill a $1.6 million one-to-one grant match with America’s Warrior Partnership (AWP), a national organization that seeks to unite community-based organizations to collaborate for an improved network of resources for veterans. The remaining dollars to fulfill the AWP grant match are funded by Goodwill through its successful social enterprise model. Continue reading

SANTA ANA – Today, Career College of California has been designated a 2016 Military Friendly® School by Victory Media, the leader in successfully connecting the military and civilian worlds, and publisher of G.I. Jobs®, STEM Jobs SM and Military Spouse. The Military Friendly® Schools designation provides service members and their families with transparent, data driven ratings about post‐military education and career opportunities.
Institutions competed for the elite Military Friendly® School title by completing a survey of over 100 questions covering ten categories, including military support on campus, graduation and employment outcomes, and military spouse policies. Survey responses were scored against benchmarks across these key indicators of success. In addition, data was independently tested by EY (Ernst & Young) based upon the weightings and methodology established by Victory Media with guidance from an independent Advisory Board of higher education and recruiting professionals.
