Last week, a police officer on patrol at a Recreation Center contacted a man sitting in his vehicle, according to the Fountain Valley Police Department.

A quick records check revealed the subject had EIGHT (yes, eight!) outstanding warrants out of Illinois — including charges for homicide, assault, and failure to appear.

The subject was taken into custody and will be extradited to Illinois to face his charges.

The FVPD remains committed to keeping our community safe, one proactive contact at a time!

If convicted, the suspect could face the following penalties under Illinois law:

  • Homicide (First-Degree Murder – 720 ILCS 5/9-1):
    • Class M felony.
    • Punishable by 20 years to life in prison.
    • In cases with aggravating factors (e.g., multiple victims, felony murder), life without parole is possible.
  • Assault (720 ILCS 5/12-1):
    • Simple assault is a Class C misdemeanor.
    • Punishable by up to 30 days in jail and/or fines up to $1,500.
    • If charged as aggravated assault (e.g., involving a weapon or public official), it becomes a Class A misdemeanor or felony, with up to 3 years in prison.
  • Failure to Appear (725 ILCS 5/110-10):
    • If the original charge was a felony, failure to appear is a Class 4 felony.
    • Punishable by 1 to 3 years in prison and fines up to $25,000.
    • May result in revocation of bond and additional charges.
  • Extradition to Illinois:
    • The suspect will be transported to Illinois under a governor’s warrant.
    • Once in Illinois, he will face prosecution for each outstanding charge.

Each charge will be prosecuted separately, and if convicted on multiple counts, sentences may be served consecutively, significantly increasing total prison time.
