COSTA MESA, Calif. (June 23, 2024) — A message from the City of Costa Mesa about the Talbert Park brush fire:

At 1:15pm today, June 23, 2024, Park Rangers noticed a brush fire at the north end of Talbert Regional Park. Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue, promptly responded and started to extinguish the fire.

Given the proximity to nearby neighborhoods, the City of Costa Mesa activated the Emergency Operations Center. As a result of the smoke hazard, residents were encouraged to stay indoors.

Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue worked in unified command with Orange County Fire Authority, several neighboring agencies responded to assist, and public safety personnel were committed for several hours.

To provide the immediate neighborhood with a safe location away from the smoke, the Balearic Community Center was opened up as an evacuation/information center for a couple of hours.

The voluntary evacuations for the Swan neighborhood are now lifted and the evacuation center at the Balearic Community Center is closed.

At 6 p.m. today, the brushfire is now in the clean-up stage. There are currently no threats to structures or surrounding neighborhoods as a result.

Several Fire personnel will remain on scene for the next couple hours, and will remain overnight on fire watch out of an abundance of caution.

Per Sensor Aircraft, the fire is preliminarily mapped at 8.4 acres. The Costa Mesa Police Department and Fire & Rescue are investigating the cause of the fire.

Fire personnel remain on scene at the Talbert Park brush fire and are currently in a “mop-up” or clean up stage. There are currently no threats to structures or surrounding neighborhoods as a result.
