Los Angeles – Baseball legend Steve Garvey has surged to first place in California’s US Senate primary election according to a new poll released today by LA Times/Berkeley IGS, continuing his campaign’s momentum since he announced in October 2023.
“I am deeply humbled by the trust and support shown by Californians in this latest poll,” Garvey said. “This demonstrates that our message of addressing the real issues that Californians care about with compassionate, common-sense solutions is resonating more than the tired political bickering of career politicians. It’s clear that people are ready for new leadership that brings us together to build a brighter future for California.”
Garvey has consistently placed in the top two in public polls since December.
“When the LA Times/Berkeley IGS poll first included Steve Garvey on Nov. 3, 2023, a month after the campaign launch, we said ‘as Californians become reacquainted with Garvey and learn more about his commonsense, solution-oriented campaign to improve their lives, we believe this will become a race to beat Steve Garvey,’ said Garvey campaign spokesman, Matt Shupe. “With Adam Schiff’s aggressive campaign against Garvey and the latest primary poll results, our predictions are proving accurate. Garvey’s half-century bond with Californians transcend politics and will prove to be a formidable force in both the primary and general elections.”
Methodology:
The findings in this report are based on a Berkeley IGS Poll conducted by the Institute of Governmental Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. The poll was completed online in English and Spanish February 22-27, 2024, among 6,536 California registered voters, of whom a weighted subsample of 3,304 had either already voted or were considered likely to vote in the state’s March 2024 primary election. Funding for the poll was provided in part by the Los Angeles Times.

Garvey, a former professional baseball player who played as a first baseman for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres from 1969 to 1987, was a 10-time All-Star, National League Most Valuable Player in 1974, and National League Championship Series MVP in 1978 and 1984.
