R. Scott Moxley, of the OC Weekly, attended last night’s Santa Ana City Council meeting.  Now the OC Weekly has piled on Councilman David Benavides too.  Here are a few excerpts from Moxley’s post:

“Thank you for standing up for the community,” community activist Sean H. Mill told Pulido, Alvarez and Tinajero. “It’s time to stand up to evil.”

A red-faced Benavides stared down at his notes but was eventually defended by one of the Independence Day group participants who said patriotism–not bigotry–had been the group’s mission on the national holiday.

While Moxley didn’t credit us for breaking this story, he did include the now-famous video by our friend Naui Huitzilopochtli, which showed Minuteman Gary Hynds, whose wife Anita was honored by Benavides last night, calling Naui and his friends “effing webacks.”

Can this month get any worse for Benavides?

Whatever aspirations Benavides has to run for the 69th Assembly District are now toast.  And one has to wonder if his colleagues on the City Council are going to find someone else to back in November…

    1. Vern,

Moxley added a credit to the story. The real question is when will the mainstream media jump on board this story? The Register and L.A. Times are asleep at the wheel…

  1. Well, that’s good.

I can never get an answer from him when I have questions about his stories. (Specifically the Dana-in-drag-at-Sirhan’s story.) And I remember Gus, Heather and Reggie being pretty frustrated when he did a Fairgrounds Swindle story without mentioning all the work they’d done on the issue for months. Great & funny journalist though.

  2. Let’s not forget that Lupe Moreno was–for a long time–one of Pulido’s commissioners. Personally, I wouldn’t give her any type of recognition, other than to acknowledge she is a bigot, but, it is also unfair to say that giving this planning committee a certificate for celebrating our nation’s independence is somehow WORSE than having Lupe Moreno serve as “your” commissioner. And let’s not forget that at least the majority of the council at that time approved and anointed Lupe Moreno’s appointment as Pulido’s commissioner. Let’s be fair in the assessment of what all of our elected officials have done to give voice and a platform to the Lupe Morenos of our community….

  3. One other point, how is that Pulido can walk out on his former commissioner, Lupe Moreno, and keep a straight face???

    1. Me,

You are omitting the most important detail – Pulido dumped Moreno. He wised up. Why is Benavides still clinging to her? He and Bustamante are the only Council Members left who bend knee to the Usual Suspects. We are stuck with Bustamante but can be free of Benavides in November.
