Recently, a motor officer stopped a driver who was going 84 mph in a 40 MPH zone, according to the Fullerton Police Department.

Did you know that when you’re driving at 84 MPH, you’re covering about 123 feet per second? That’s almost half the length of a football field before you can even blink.

In addition to receiving a hefty citation, speeding like this significantly increases stopping distance and the severity of crashes. In other words, it’s not just your wallet at risk.

The FPD reminds drivers that speed limits are not meant to ruin your day; they exist to ensure everyone reaches their destination safely.

Sure. Here’s an explanation of the penalties a driver might face for going 84 mph in a 40 mph zone in California:

  • The driver was going 44 mph over the speed limit, which is considered excessive speeding.
  • The base fine for this violation is around $100, but with additional fees and surcharges, the total cost can be over $500.
  • The driver will likely receive 1 point on their driving record. Accumulating too many points can lead to license suspension.
  • Insurance rates may increase significantly after such a violation.
  • The driver may be required to appear in court due to the severity of the offense.
  • If the officer considers the behavior reckless, the driver could be charged with reckless driving, which carries heavier fines, possible jail time, and more points on the license.
