On Friday, December 19, 2025, the Santa Ana Police Department will conduct a DUI and CDL checkpoint from 6:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city. These checkpoints are strategically placed based on data showing impaired-driving crashes, with the goal of keeping suspected impaired drivers off the road and promoting public safety.

Why This Matters

Driving under the influence isn’t limited to alcohol. The Santa Ana Police Department reminds residents that prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also impair driving. While marijuana is legal in California for medicinal and recreational use, driving under its influence remains illegal.

The Cost of a DUI

A first-time DUI offense in California can be financially devastating. According to the Santa Ana Police Department, drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license. This figure includes court costs, legal fees, mandatory DUI education programs, and increased insurance premiums.

Impact on Employment

A DUI conviction can have serious consequences for your career. Many employers conduct background checks, and a DUI can:

  • Disqualify you from jobs that require driving.
  • Affect professional licenses in fields like healthcare, law, and finance.
  • Damage your reputation and credibility, making career advancement harder.

Impact on Insurance

Insurance companies view DUI convictions as high-risk behavior. After a DUI:

  • Your auto insurance rates can skyrocket, sometimes doubling or tripling.
  • Some insurers may cancel your policy, forcing you to seek coverage through high-risk providers.
  • You may be required to file an SR-22 form, proving financial responsibility, which adds extra costs.

Bottom Line

The financial, professional, and personal consequences of a DUI far outweigh the convenience of driving impaired. Plan ahead—use rideshare services, designate a sober driver, or stay where you are. Protect your future and your community.
