Segerstrom High School senior Jonathan Espinoza has done it again – even as he struggles to collect enough donations to pay for his registration fee at Georgetown University, he has landed an interview with NBC reporter Colleen Williams, to talk about Project SELF – “a program that helps low-income minorities in Orange County with internships at legal firms and how it has helped him pursue his future career,” according to NBC News.
Congratulations Jonathan! I have a feeling those donations are going to really start rolling in now!

Study: White students more likely to win scholarships

A national report released this week by financial aid guru Mark Kantrowitz finds minority students are less likely to win private scholarships or receive merit-based institutional grants than Caucasian students – a pattern that also holds true in California.
The analysis [PDF], based on 2003-04 and 2007-08 data for hundreds of thousands of students from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, found that nationally, Caucasian students are 40 percent more likely to win private scholarships than minority students.
Kantrowitz’s report did not drill down to individual states, but he provided California Watch with data from the Golden State. The figures show that white students here also receive a disproportionately greater share of private scholarship funding – albeit to a lesser degree than on the national level. Caucasians represent 44 percent of private scholarship recipients in California but only 41 percent of the undergraduate student population. Minority students, by contrast, represent 55 percent of scholarship recipients and 58 percent of undergraduates.
Kantrowitz, who publishes the popular college financial aid websites FinAid and Fastweb and does consulting in computer science, artificial intelligence, and statistical and policy analysis, said he decided to embark on the study because he read a news story that repeated a claim he hears often: White students don’t get their fair share of scholarships

Congrats Jonathan…a full ride to any school is something to be proud of and a reward for hard work. Hopefully you learned quite a bit during your time at the law firm you worked at and you were able to bank some of that money while you were at the law firm.
Being someone who is at a professional services firm- I would highly recommend that the firm knows your economic situation with the application fee. I am sure the firm, if not even one of the partners you worked with, would be more than happy to pay your app fee. This is especially true if they in deed do want you to come back and work for them. It may be the best $900 that they ever spend. Talk to the right person and I got to believe that they will step right up because they do see it as good investment.
You seem like someone who has a good head on their shoulders and is motivated to be successful. As the study in the book “The Millionaire Mind” (a very good read) indicates, often financially successful (no, that should not be the only goal) people are told over and over that they “can’t” and they become motivated by that. Hopefully you are one who is motivated by naysayers. Go for it!

You know Jonathan I always try to use humor when dealing with folks like Stanley. But he really can’t let go of his issues with our people and that is a very sad thing. I have met his wife and she is a lovely lady. In fact Stanley has told me that her brothers have come up from Mexico to visit and they get along just swell.
Stanley went through a lot of traumatic experiences back in his homeland. Perhaps that accounts for some of this angst. But it does not excuse his hateful comments.

I understand your suggestion of staying above the level of those like Fiala. Ignorant, foolish and hateful individuals have historically been responsible for racism,and intolerance . If ignored they are given the opportunity to insight hate towards others.
Many civil rights fighters lost their lives fighting hate and intolerance. In fact their efforts are the reason blacks,Mexican – Americans, women and others of color have the chance you have of an education. In fact it is the reason you now can attend Georgetown University.
