SANCHEZ VOTES TO PUT VETERANS BACK TO WORK

WASHINGTON, D.C. –Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47), senior member of the House Armed Services Committee, today voted in favor of President Obama’s veterans’ jobs proposal to help put veterans back to work. The bill will provide two tax credits for businesses that hire unemployed veterans or veterans with service-connected disabilities. It also would expand education and training opportunities for veterans. Rep. Sanchez has been a vocal supporter of this initiative which was originally a part of the American Jobs Act.

“Maintaining our commitment to veterans is one of my most important priorities,” said Sanchez. “Unfortunately, the negative impact of the recession has been very significant to veterans. Nationwide, more than one million veterans are unemployed. Young veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have an unemployment rate higher than their non-veteran counterparts. This is unacceptable– after all they have sacrificed, veterans shouldn’t have to fight for a job once they’ve come home.

“The tax credits included in this bill will lower veteran unemployment through increased hiring and the job training will help veterans translate their military skills for the civilian workforce. This is exactly the sort of initiative we need to keep our country– and those who have fought for it– moving forward.”

Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is proud to represent California’s 47th Congressional District, which includes the cities of Anaheim, Garden Grove, Santa Ana, and parts of Fullerton in Orange County. She serves as Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces and a senior member of the Committee on Homeland Security. Rep. Sanchez is also a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition and sits on the bipartisan, bicameral Joint Economic Committee.
