A documented gang member, Jorge Ocampo, 21, was being held Saturday in connection with a deadly hit-and-run car crash in Santa Ana. He turned himself in to authorities late Friday evening, according to KTLA.

Ocampo was booked on suspicion of two counts of vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and being an unlicensed driver, according to the SAPD.  He was allegedly behind the wheel of a speeding black Audi that ran a stop sign and broadsided a blue Nissan making a left turn at the intersection of Cabrillo Park Drive and Fruit Street around 10:43 a.m. Friday, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Witnesses said the Audi was playing loud music and traveling at high speed northbound on Cabrillo Park when it struck the Sentra, which was turning from East Fruit Street, about 11:30 a.m., according to the O.C. Register.

“He did not try to stop. He blew straight through the stop sign and our victims received the full impact,” said Corp. Anthony Bertagna of the Santa Ana Police Department, according to CBS.

Witnesses say they saw Ocampo get out of the Audi to check on the passengers in the minivan. He then pulled out his cellphone, but police say he didn’t dial 911 for help. Instead, he called a friend to pick him up, leaving the two victims to die.

SAPD say Ocampo then fled into a nearby condo complex after the crash and then vanished. Police earlier said there was also another man in the car with Ocampo, but after interviewing witnesses, officers determined that there was only one suspect in the vehicle, according to ABC.
