About National Bacon Day

National Bacon Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated annually on December 30th. It is a day dedicated to celebrating bacon in all its forms and encourages people to enjoy this popular food beyond its traditional role as a breakfast item.

Origin and Purpose

The holiday was founded in 1997 by Danya Goodman and Meff Leonard, two college friends who wanted to create a lighthearted, non-religious celebration during the winter holiday season. It was intended as a day for people to bond over their shared love of bacon and take a break from more serious holiday traditions.

Ways to Celebrate

People celebrate National Bacon Day in various ways:

  • Cooking and Eating Bacon: The most common way to celebrate is by incorporating bacon into a variety of dishes, from classic bacon and eggs to salads, sandwiches, cocktails, and even desserts like bacon-wrapped dates or bacon ice cream.
  • Social Gatherings: People often host gatherings or parties where bacon is the main theme, sometimes setting up “bacon bars” with different varieties and cuts.
  • Media: According to the founders, some suggested traditions include watching movies starring actor Kevin Bacon or movies with “bacon” in the title.
  • Restaurant Deals: As seen with the Wendy’s deal, many restaurants and fast-food chains offer special promotions and discounts to mark the occasion.

Additional Facts

  • Multiple Bacon Days: There is also an “International Bacon Day” which is often observed on the Saturday before Labor Day in the United States.
  • Historical Significance: The use of bacon dates back thousands of years to ancient China and the Roman Empire. During World War II, civilians were urged to donate bacon grease, which was used to create glycerin for bombs and gunpowder.
  • Popularity: The United States has experienced “bacon mania” since the late 1990s, with the average American consuming around 18 pounds of bacon annually.
