Early this morning, police officers responded to the 100 block of East Brentwood St., where a Tesla had collided with a light pole and fire hydrant, according to the Orange Police Department.

Thankfully, no one was injured. The driver was later arrested for DUI and narcotics possession and booked at Orange County Jail.

The Orange Police Department thanked Orange City Fire, Orange Public Works, and Southern California Edison for their assistance at the scene.

This is your reminder: please don’t drive impaired. Your safety — and the safety of others — depends on it.

Here’s a summary of what the driver likely faces:

Legal Penalties in California

  • DUI (first offense):
    • Fine: $390–$1,000 plus court fees
    • Jail: Up to 6 months (often replaced by probation)
    • License suspension: 4–6 months (restricted license possible with Ignition Interlock Device)
    • Mandatory DUI education program: 3–9 months
    • Additional penalties if prior DUIs, high BAC, or injury involved
  • Narcotics possession (simple possession):
    • Usually a misdemeanor under Health & Safety Code §11350
    • Penalty: Up to 1 year in county jail and/or $1,000 fine
    • Diversion programs (drug treatment) often available for first-time offenders
    • Felony charges possible if intent to sell or large quantities

Impact on Auto Insurance

  • A DUI conviction typically raises premiums by 85–164% in California
  • Average annual cost after DUI: about $4,937 (vs. $1,868 before)
  • Insurers may cancel existing policies; SR-22 filing required for license reinstatement
  • High-risk classification lasts 3–5 years, sometimes longer

Impact on Employment

  • Current job:
    • If driving is part of the role, termination is likely
    • Some employers require disclosure of arrests or convictions under contract or policy
    • Professional licenses (healthcare, education, commercial driving) may be jeopardized
  • Future jobs:
    • DUI and drug convictions appear on background checks
    • Can limit opportunities in regulated industries or roles requiring trust and safety
    • May affect ability to obtain certain certifications or security clearances

  1. That’s my house, we were standing 10’ in front of the light post when he hit. If the pole wasn’t there we’d have been killed
