Dozens of Americorps volunteers descended on Santa Ana’s Jerome Park yesterday morning, to set up the festivities for the Cesar Chavez Day celebration organized by Assemblyman Jose Solorio, Santa Ana Councilmember Vincent Sarmiento , SOLEVAR Executive Director Seferino Garcia , and several community leaders.
It was terribly windy, but the vendors who were setting up the canopies over the exibit tables compensated by adding more support to the temporary structures.Â
Santa Ana residents were already showing up in droves to check out the books on display and the wonderful community garden run by the folks at the Grain Project.
I was not able to stay for the festivities as I had to go teach a class on Saturday afternoon, but Solorio promised to send me more pictures, which we will add to this post once we get them.
The event was sponsored by: City of Santa Ana, The Gas Company, Susy Party Rentals, De La Rosa & Co., AT&T, Law Offices of Alfredo Amezcua, Wells Fargo, Ware Disposal, and the Early Literacy Program. The Rancho Santiago Community College District was also an exhibitor at the event.
I was there the whole day…and it was a great event!
There were free performances by various groups: Aztec dancers; Other Mexican folkloric dancers (music & dance from the region of Veracruz); a type of polka/country dance (“zapateado”); a faith-based rap group named AGAPE (which I believe means brotherly/spiritual love).
Present was also Ms. Maria Elena Chavez (niece of Cesar Chavez) who gave a synopsis of La Causa (“the struggle for workers and civil rights). She shared that a group of citizens is reenacting the approximate 400 miles March of the 1960’s to Sacramento on behalf of workers rights and education and will arrive on April 21 – “March for California’s Future”

Furthermore there were other organizations giving away Free Books to encourage children and adults to read (Roberto Luna & Dr. Perez).
As the Commander of UMAVA (United Mexican-American Veterans Association), I also connected with representatives from Mercy House, which provides Transitional Shelters (emergency overnight shelter) for Homeless individuals, and assistance to facilitate housing stability and economic self-sufficiency through their Rapid Re-Housing Program; and with 211 the organization that provides referral to services for those in most immediate need.

clear pictures -what brand of camera do you use?

I use a Canon digital that I bought at Costco. I also clean up the pictures and crop them. That process adjusts the lighting, etc. Makes it look like I know what I’m doing! 🙂
well I am not techy at all— I stupidly purchased the most expensive of the digitals at Best Buy about a yr ago, its one of those smart cameras that detects smiles LOL LOL— and literally took 5 pictures at Disneyland- and it never worked again. It was never dropped, did not get wet, or anything at all.
Could not charge it -or turn it on – it was frozen.
So I threw it in the garage stack since I had misplaced my receipt, and I have never dealt with manufacturers over warranty issues—pet peeve!
– and well now I am shopping for a new one not based on price of course LOL

If you remember the credit card you used, go back to Best Buy. They can look up the sale. Most such equipment has a one year warranty.
And always buy the extra insurance at Best Buy.
Also, if you used their rewards program, they can look it up that way too.
And finally, if you used a Visa, they also insure your purchases.
WOW thanks a lot—will do just that- hopefully this helped others that are just as aweful when it comes to this–I’d rather throw something aside and forget about it or give it away rather than dealing with exchanging something.
But as times are so uncertain in this economy- and in my own pocket LOL— I am learning to watch my pennies, add up my dimes, and save them.
