Quick and thorough work by firefighters prevented a fire from spreading through a building full of sleeping residents in Tustin early this morning, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

Residents in a townhouse on Mitchell Avenue called 911 at 12:17 a.m. to report a strong odor of smoke inside but no fire.

Firefighters arrived to the two-story complex with smoke already in the attic but no visible fire.

After opening up the space between the first floor ceiling and the floor above, firefighters found the fire and confined it to the void space, wall, and attic.

Nobody was injured, and the cause is under investigation.

Assistance was provided by Orange City Fire and the Tustin Police Department. Southern California Red Cross provided assitance to the displaced residents.
