The early Primary Election results are in and while they are not yet complete most likely the results will not change much over the next few days.

Santa Ana Mayor Vicente Sarmiento got his usual 33% 31.6% of the vote in tonight’s Primary Election, which was not enough for him to win the election for the 2nd Supervisorial District. Sarmiento will now have to face off against Garden Grove City Council Member Kim Bernice Nguyen in the November General Election. Nguyen garnered 23% of the vote in tonight’s Primary Election. Both Sarmiento and Nguyen are registered Democrats.

Former Santa Ana City Council Member Claudia Alvarez easily won a judicial seat as she got over 58% of the vote for Court Office No. 5. It seems as if all the prosecutors who were running for OC judicial seats won over their more liberal opponents.

OCDA Todd Spitzer won his reelection campaign easily with over 61% of the vote as the voters rejected his ultra-liberal opponent Pete Hardin. Only 20% of the voters supported Hardin.

There were a few surprises in the other Supervisorial races as Katrina Foley got over 40% of vote in the 5th District. Foley, a Democrat, got 17% more votes than the leading Republican in that race, Pat Bates. As Foley got less than half the vote they will face off again in November in a runoff election.

Over in the First District a liberal Democrat, Sunny Park, edged out a moderate incumbent, Doug Chaffee. However Park only got 35% of the vote so she and Chaffee will have to run against each other again in November. It was a bad night for the Chaffee family as his wife, Paulette, lost in the race for the OC Board of Education, Area 4. In that contest Tim Shaw got over 50% of the vote so Paulette is adios.

Al Mijares, the OC Superintendent of Education, prevailed in his reelection campaign with over 60% of the vote.

OC Clerk Recorder Hugh Nguyen also won his reelection with over 83% of the vote.

In a shocker the GOP appears to have lost two House seats as Young Kim is losing badly in the 40th District to her Democratic opponent, Asif Mahmood. They will face off again in the November General Election. Michelle Steel is also losing, although not by much, in the 45th District, to Democrat Jay Chen. They too will face off again in November. Lou Correa trounced the field in the 46th Congressional District. He will easily win in November.

Over in the 68th Assembly District Avelino Valencia, a Democrat, got over 54% of the vote. He will have to face off against Santa Ana’s Mike Tardif in November. Will Valencia’s connection to the tainted cabal in Anaheim doom him in the General Election?

Tom Umberg got a lot more votes than his GOP opponent Rhonda Shader. But they too will have to run again in the General Election.

At the top of the ticket California Governor Gavin Newsom will advance to the primary against his GOP opponent Brian Dahle. Newsom got over 60% of the Primary votes.
