This weekend, night shift O.C. Sheriff deputies conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by two individuals, according to Laguna Hills Police Services.

A records check revealed the driver was on probation, and the passenger consented to a search.

During the search, deputies recovered three firearms, multiple rounds of ammunition, and Xanax pills.

Thanks to the deputies’ proactive actions, these dangerous weapons and illegal drugs were removed from the streets, keeping our community safer.

Xanax (generic name: alprazolam) is a prescription medication used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. It belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which work by calming the brain and nervous system.

  • Helps people feel calm and relaxed
  • Slows down brain activity to ease nervousness and tension

Common Side Effects

Serious Risks

  • Can be habit-forming and lead to dependence, even when taken as prescribed
  • Stopping suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms like seizures or hallucinations

  • May lead to physical and psychological dependence

Here are the penalties the suspects could face based on the incident described:

1. Possession of Firearms by a Probationer

  • In California, it is illegal for someone on probation to possess firearms.
  • This is typically charged as a felony.
  • Penalties may include:
    • Up to 3 years in state prison
    • Fines up to $10,000
    • Revocation of probation, which could result in serving a previously suspended sentence

2. Possession of Xanax Without a Prescription

  • Xanax is a controlled substance (Schedule IV).
  • Possession without a valid prescription is a misdemeanor.
  • Penalties may include:
    • Up to 1 year in county jail
    • Fines up to $1,000
    • Possible eligibility for a drug diversion program if it’s a first offense

3. Possession of Ammunition by a Prohibited Person

  • If the driver is prohibited from owning firearms, possession of ammunition is also illegal.
  • This can be charged as a felony.
  • Penalties may include:
    • Up to 3 years in prison
    • Additional fines and probation violations

If either individual has prior convictions or if the firearms were loaded, concealed, or unregistered, additional charges and sentencing enhancements could apply.
