A driver crashed in Costa Mesa early this morning, before 1:30 a.m. The driver appeared to have lost control and took out a tree in the process, at the 1500 block of Newport, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department.
The Costa Mesa Police Department indicated that the crash was alcohol-related. There was only one vehicle involved as well as the unfortunate tree.
The Costa Mesa Police Department issued a traffic advisory before 7am to advise morning commuters about a closed lane.
The 50-year-old driver was treated and transported by Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue to a nearby hospital where he is being treated for traumatic injuries.
That driver will likely be facing DUI charges although this was not confirmed by the Costa Mesa Police Department.
The Costa Mesa Police Department reminds us that drivers who are feeling buzzed have other options to get home safe, such as using a ride share service or having a designated sober driver. DUI crashes are completely preventable and there are no excuses.
