The Spirit of Democracy Art CompetitionDeadline: EXTENDED July 30, 2012

The Orange County Registrar of Voters invites all Orange County residents to enter the 2012 Spirit of Democracy Art Competition. The competition is open to all Orange County residents, with winning entries exhibited at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art in Santa Ana.A jury panel of distinguished members from the arts community will select First, Second, and Third Place winners, in addition to Honorable Mention prizes, in each of the following categories for entries that best depict the theme of the competition:

• Category I: Grades 1 – 6
• Category II: Grades 7 – 12*
• Category III: 18 years* and olderA Grand Prize winner will be awarded to the overall winning entry.* Artist who is 18 years old and a high-school student may choose to be considered in either Category II or Category III, but not in both categories.

Theme of the Art Contest:The Spirit of Democracy is an initiative led by the Orange County Registrar of Voters, in partnership with the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA), to showcase the talent of local Orange County artists and stimulate ideas and discussion on democracy. The Spirit of Democracy invites submissions from artists that evince the democratic process, civic engagement, and what democracy and voting mean.All artwork should strive to capture the Spirit of Democracy and be related to the importance of voting and volunteerism. Images or depictions not relevant to the theme will be disqualified from the contest.

History of Manzanar shown at Gallery 207 Revisiting Manzanar is a part of the ongoing photography and video installation called, Engaging In Their Legacy. A collaborative art project capturing the present environment of an American Concentration Camp located in the Owens Valley during WWII.  Created by artists, Jaydee Dizon, Sonora Ortiz and Alex Green who documented the 43^rd Annual Pilgrimage in Manzanar on April 2012.  Show your support and join us in the Artist Reception on Saturday August 4th from 6-10 PM at Gallery 207/ Raven Studios, 207 N. Guillermo Valentín was born in Michoacán, México. He studied art at “Bellas Artes”, Academy of Art in Baja Ca. México, and continued his art education at Centro Cultural “El Nigromante”, in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato. His professor and mentor, German sculptor Lothar Kestenbaum, constantly encouraged Valentín on the experimentation and exploration of different art techniques.
