Last Sunday, a female was caught on surveillance cameras stealing from Ulta and taking off in a car, according to the Irvine Police Department.

The IPD requested help from the Costa Mesa Police and their officers spotted her vehicle parked at the South Coast Plaza.

IPD and CMPD officers waited for the female as she returned to her car and then detained her.

Carisma Thomas, 41, of Georgia, was arrested and booked at the Orange County Jail for charges such as burglary and possessing burglary tools.

Based on the reported charges, Carisma Thomas could face the following penalties under California law:

  • Burglary (Penal Code § 459)
    • Entering a commercial building with intent to commit theft
    • Second-degree burglary (commercial) is a felony
    • Penalty: up to 3 years in county jail
  • Possession of burglary tools (Penal Code § 466)
    • Misdemeanor offense
    • Applies to items like crowbars, pliers, or tools used to break into property
    • Penalty: up to 6 months in county jail and/or fines
  • Petty theft or grand theft (Penal Code § 484/487)
    • Depends on the value of stolen items
    • If under $950, petty theft (misdemeanor)
    • If over $950, grand theft (felony)
    • Penalty: up to 6 months (petty theft) or up to 3 years (grand theft)
  • Possible probation or restitution
    • Court may order restitution to Ulta for stolen merchandise
    • Probation may include fines, community service, or theft prevention classes

If she has prior convictions, sentencing enhancements could apply.
