FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 16, 2012
THEATRE OUT TO OPEN BROADWAY CLASSIC “CABARET”
Santa Ana, CA (6/16/2012) Theatre Out, Orange County’s gay and lesbian theatre company, who brought you recent hit productions of AVENUE Q and SPRING AWAKENING is pleased to present the Tony Award-Winning musical CABARET beginning June 29, 2012. Running through August 4, this classic musical explores the price of ignorance as the Nazi regime begins it’s conquest of Europe.
Adapted from Christopher Isherwood’s collection of short stories, THE BERLIN STORIES, CABARET was hailed as a groundbreaking “concept” musical when it opened in 1966, winning 8 Tony Awards inclusing “Best Musical”. Lyricist Fred Ebb and composer John Kander revolutionized the musical form by integrating songs that both commented on the story from an outsider’s perspective and moved the story along in a unique way that blended traditional “book songs” with lavish production numbers set in the decandant Kit Kat Klub of pre-War Germany. The 1997 Broadway Revival starring Alan Cumming and Natasha Richardson garnered 4 Tony Awards including Best Revival.
The scene is a night club in Berlin, The Kit Kat Klub, as the 1920’s are drawing to a close. A Master of Ceremonies welcomes the audience and the cast to the show and assures them that, whatever their troubles, they will forget them in the Klub because, inside, life is always beautiful. At the Klub, a young American writer, Cliff, meets the headliner Sally Bowles. The two navigate sexuality and politics in their one room flat while Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz wrestle with questions of love and loyality with the looming regime change in Germany. Here, lines and morality are blurred and it is sometimes easier to feign ignorance than recognize the truth as history is in the process of being made. Memorable musical numbers include It Couldn’t Please Me More, Willkommen, Cabaret, Don’t Tell Mama and Two Ladies. This production of CABARET is presented in the round utilizing the 1987 Revival script which includes Don’t Go and The Telephone Dance.
“Cabaret is a classic musical with unforgettable music,” commented Joey Baital, producer and Co-Founder of Theatre Out. “Our immersive approach to the material transports the audience into the divine Kit Kat Klub presenting the show in the round, with the denizens of the Kit Kat Klub co-mingling with the audience.”
“We are truly challenging our audiences to not be impacted by this powerful piece,” commented David C. Carnevale, director of CABARET and Co-Founder of Theatre Out. “Inside the Klub, everything is beautiful. Outside, Europe is crumbling. When these two worlds collide, everyone is truly touched and reminded of the price of ignorance.”
Choreographer Frankie Marrone has created original dances that utilize every corner and inch of the theatre, emphasizing the devine decadance of the era.
Under the direction of David C. Carnevale and vocal direction of Stephen Amundson, the cast includes Tito Ortiz, Andrea Dennison-Laufer, Jaycob Hunter, Sherry Domerego, Richard Comeau, Matthew Carvin, Melanie Gable, JT Corzine, Charlie Bostwick, Sergio Mitre, Jared Ryan Kaitz, David Miller, Caroline Mulvihill, Alexis Stansfield, Megan Endicott and Nicki Peek with choreography by Frankie Marrone.
