The Tustin Police would like to talk to him about his bad day!

The suspect appears to be in his late 50’s or early 60’s with gray hair and a slim build. He was wearing khaki pants, a black high collar shirt and a tan vest when he was captured on a surveillance video keying the Tesla.

There have been several incidents of vandalism targeting Tesla vehicles, dealerships, and charging stations, but there isn’t a single organization leading these acts. Instead, the vandalism appears to be carried out by various individuals and groups with different motives. Some incidents have been linked to protests against Elon Musk and his policies.

For example, in the United States, there have been multiple reports of Tesla properties being vandalized, including spray-painting, arson, and other forms of damage. In Canada, activist groups have been involved in similar acts. However, law enforcement agencies have not found evidence of a coordinated effort behind these attacks.

In California, keying a car, including a Tesla, is considered an act of vandalism. If the damage exceeds $400, it is classified as felony vandalism. Penalties for felony vandalism can include:

  • Imprisonment: Up to 3 years in state prison.
  • Fines: Up to $10,000, or more if the damage is extensive.
  • Restitution: Payment to the victim for the cost of repairs.

For example, a recent incident in San Jose involved a man who was arrested and charged with felony vandalism after keying a Tesla in a Costco parking lot.

Repairing a Tesla that has been keyed can be quite costly, depending on the extent of the damage. Generally, the cost can range from $1,500 to $3,000 or more. This includes labor and materials for repainting and restoring the affected areas.

If the damage is extensive, requiring more than just surface repairs, the cost could be higher. It’s always a good idea to get a few quotes from certified Tesla repair centers to get an accurate estimate.
