40 oz. to Freedom, a Sublime tribute band, is playing at Santa Ana’s Galaxy Concert Theatre on Thursday, Dec. 30, at 8 pm.
Galaxy’s website states that the show is free. So does the band’s website. A band called the Dealers is opening that night.
Sublime was an American ska punk band from Long Beach, California, formed in 1988.[1] The band’s line–up, unchanged until their breakup, consisted of Bradley Nowell (vocals and guitar), Bud Gaugh (drums and percussion), and Eric Wilson (bass guitar). Michael “Miguel” Happoldt also contributed on a few Sublime songs, such as “New Thrash.” Lou Dog, Nowell’s dalmatian, was the mascot of the band. Nowell died of a heroin overdose in 1996 and Sublime immediately split up, according to Wikipedia.
With the mainstream success of their self-titled album, going five times Multi-platinum and earning worldwide airplay, Sublime’s impact persists to this day.[21] As one of the most popular ska-punk bands, it is credited with reviving popular interest in ska, as well as bringing punk rock into the mainstream. Their signature sound & their songs are often associated with the beach/coastal areas of California, such as San Diego, Venice Beach & Brad’s hometown Long Beach.
Several original members of Sublime announced in November that they would be touring with Rome Ramirez, as Sublime with Rome. They cannot use the name Sublime as it was trademarked by their original lead singer, Bradley Nowell, who died tragically of a heroin overdose in 1996.
