IRVINE, CA – An Irvine man has been arrested for assaulting and threatening his neighbor. Nathaniel Estes, 35, was arrested this morning, March 8, 2015, following a stand-off with Irvine Police Department (IPD) officers.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., IPD responded to an apartment complex on the 500 block of Veneto regarding a male subject causing a disturbance and threatening to kill a neighbor.

The investigation shows the victim approached the front door of Estes’ 2nd story residence to talk to him about loud yelling coming from inside. Estes stepped out the door, pointed a handgun at the victim and threatened to kill him. The victim fled and contacted the Irvine Police Department.

When officers arrived on scene, Estes had returned to his apartment and refused to come out and surrender to IPD.
The Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team responded, and crisis negotiators continued speaking with Estes for several hours. At one point, Estes armed himself with a firearm and appeared to be pointing it out the window toward the SWAT officers, who were observing the location from inside a SWAT rescue vehicle.

At approximately 5:20 a.m., Estes exited his apartment and walked down the stairs. He was uncooperative with officers and attempted to retreat back up the stairs into his apartment. A SWAT officer deployed 40mm, less lethal, direct impact rounds, which had little effect and did not stop the suspect. A Newport Beach Police K9 officer, who responded to assist IPD, then released his K9, allowing officers to safely take the suspect into custody.

The victim sustained minor injuries. Estes was transported to an area hospital to be treated for a dog bite to the arm. He was booked in Orange County Jail upon discharge from the hospital.
