Irvine Police News Release

Irvine, Calif. (December 27, 2024) – A driver has died after being involved in a single-vehicle traffic collision, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Last night, at 10:23 p.m., the Irvine Police Department (IPD) received reports of a traffic collision on Bonita Canyon Drive under the State Route 73 (SR-73) Toll Road overpass.

IPD Officers, the Newport Beach Fire Department, and the Orange County Fire Authority quickly responded to the area. When first responders arrived, they found a 2008 Volvo SUV on fire as a result of the collision.

After fire personnel extinguished the fire, they sadly found the driver deceased inside the vehicle.

It appears the Volvo was traveling southbound on Bonita Canyon Drive and lost control for an unknown reason under SR-73. The car struck a concrete support column and caught fire.

The driver’s name is not being released pending notification of next of kin.

IPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating this case. Anyone with information about this collision should contact Detective David Juarez at 949-724-7047.
