Advisory: SAPD Investigating Bicyclist vs. Vehicle Fatal/Hit & Run
Decedent – Pending Family Notification
On Thursday, March 22, 2018 at approximately 0033 hrs. the California Highway Patrol received a 911 call from a motorist reporting a male down in the street in the 400 block of E. Goetz Street. The call was transferred to the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) who was dispatched to the area. Upon their arrival, OFCA personnel located a male covered with blood and subsequently pronounced him deceased at the scene at 0047 hrs.
Officers from the Santa Ana Police Department were dispatched to the location at the request of OCFA. Due to the suspicious nature surrounding the male’s death, detectives from the Crimes Against Person – Homicide Unit and Investigators from the Collision Investigations Unit responded to the scene to handle the investigation.
From physical evidence, it is appears as though the decedent was struck while riding his bicycle. The driver and vehicle that struck the decedent a re outstanding and unidentified at this time.

At 0033 hours, the police responded to a bicyclist down? Just after midnight? I don’t know what the situation was, but I’ve been encountering many bike riders on the south side of town that ride with no lights or reflectors and wear dark clothing, making them nearly impossible to see at night. If this was the situation, I am not surprised, but I feel bad either way that the bicyclist lost his life. Very tragic…
