The Costa Mesa police arrested two pet hoarders and rescued hundreds of birds and dogs

Yesterday at around 10:30 a.m., police detectives executed a search warrant for animal cruelty at a residence on the 2100 block of Charle Drive, according to the Costa Mesa Police Department (CMPD).

The police officers were assisted by CMPD’s Animal Control Unit, City Code Enforcement, California Department of Fish & Wildlife, United States Fish & Wildlife Service, and Homeland Security Investigations.

As a result of this search warrant, they found hundreds of birds being severely neglected and in need of medical care for a variety of conditions. Several of these birds are suffering from a variety of diseases, and poor/stressful living conditions.

The officers recovered 9 adult dogs, 5 puppies, approximately 280 neglected birds, 4 deceased birds, and several birds in grave condition. The birds were transported to a veterinarian clinic for evaluation, treatment and proper housing.

At the scene, they arrested two men, both Costa Mesa residents, 36 and 26 years old. This is an ongoing investigation and no further information will be released at this time.

The CMPD thanks the OC District Attorney’s Office and Priceless Pets for their assistance. They also want to thank the residents that were in the area for their patience as this was a large and busy scene off Harbor Boulevard and Victoria Street.
