Earlier this week, patrol officers were conducting proactive enforcement in the area of 1st Street and Lyon Street when they attempted to stop a vehicle that attempted to evade them, according to the SAPD.
Upon making contact with the driver, officers noticed a firearm in plain view in the backseat.
The driver was immediately detained, and a further investigation led officers to recover a loaded firearm, additional magazines, and a large machete inside the trunk.
The driver was arrested and booked at the Santa Ana Jail on multiple felony firearm violations.

In California, the penalties for multiple felony firearm violations can be quite severe. Here are some key points:
General Penalties for Felony Firearm Violations
- Felon in Possession of a Firearm: Under Penal Code Section 29800, this is a felony punishable by 16 months, 2 years, or 3 years in state prison.
- Possession of a Firearm by a Narcotics Addict: Also a felony with similar penalties.
Multiple Violations
- Enhanced Sentences: If an individual has multiple felony firearm violations, the penalties can be significantly enhanced. Repeat offenders may face longer prison sentences and higher fines.
- Aggravating Factors: Additional penalties may apply if the violations involve aggravating factors such as the use of the firearm in the commission of another crime, possession of large quantities of firearms, or involvement in gang activities.
Specific Cases
- Possession of an Assault Weapon: This can result in a felony charge with penalties of up to 8 years in state prison.
- Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony: This can lead to additional and consecutive prison terms, depending on the severity of the underlying felony.
