A wrong way driver died after crashing into another vehicle in Irvine

This morning, around 1:35 a.m., the Irvine Police Department (IPD) responded to reports of a traffic collision on Jamboree Road south of Warner Avenue. Our Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) partners also responded to assist.

The initial investigation determined that a black Hyundai Elantra was traveling the wrong way southbound on Jamboree Road in the northbound Jamboree Road traffic lanes. A head-on collision occurred with another vehicle traveling northbound on Jamboree Road, just south of Warner Avenue.

The male driver of the Hyundai Elantra sustained serious injuries from the collision and was transported to a local hospital where he later died. The other driver was not injured as a result of the collision. The identity of the decedent is being withheld until the next of kin is notified.

IPD’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the cause of the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Joshua Balos at 949-724-7024.

  1. Every single day in the United States, more than 100 people die in car crashes — the equivalent of a plane falling from the sky every 24 hours.
