On Thursday, September 28, 2023, at 12:45 AM, Santa Ana Police Communications received a report of several gang-type subjects fighting at the 1000 block of W. Central Avenue. An additional caller reported hearing a gunshot.

Officers responded and located an adult male lying on the ground suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his upper torso. Orange County Fire Authority treated the victim and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The circumstances surrounding this homicide appear gang-related and are currently being investigated. The Orange County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Edwin Medina (35) of Santa Ana.

Detectives are attempting to identify and locate any witnesses who can shed light on this incident.
