Suspect Arrested for Bank Robbery Threatens Explosives

STANTON, Calif. – (September 15, 2014) – On Monday, September 15, 2014, Orange County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a bank robbery at the Bank of the West branch located at 11051 Beach Boulevard, Stanton.  The robbery suspect, Danny Ray Worrell, 62, Stanton, threatened the bank teller with a note indicating he was armed with a gun and explosives.  The loss from the bank was cash and the suspect was seen leaving in a maroon Chevrolet corvette.

Following a broadcast of the suspect and vehicle description, sheriff’s deputies observed a maroon Chevrolet corvette in the area of Katella Avenue and Western Avenue.  Deputies conducted a felony traffic stop and took Worrell into custody.  As deputies took Worrell into custody, he made statements threatening explosives inside the vehicle.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Hazardous Device Squad (HDS) responded and conducted a remote search of the vehicle utilizing their robot, followed by a more extensive search by investigators.  No explosives were located in the vehicle; however, an amount of cash believed to have been taken during the robbery was located.  Investigators do not believe Worrell is connected to any other recent bank robberies.

Worrell was arrested for robbery and booked into Santa Ana City Jail on federal charges.  He is being held without bail and expected in Federal Court (Santa Ana), Tuesday, September 16, 2014.

The investigation is being conducted by the Orange County Bank Robbery Apprehension Team (BRAT), a Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) task force participated in by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.  Anyone with additional information is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff’s Department at (714) 647-7000.  Anonymous tips may also be submitted to Orange County Crime Stoppers at 855-TIP-OCCS (855-847-6227) or at occrimestoppers.org.
