If you work in Downtown L.A. good luck getting to work today as there is a massive May Day protest march already underway.
Here in Santa Ana a smaller May Day event is set for 2 p.m. this afternoon, at Sasscer Park, which is located at 500 Santa Ana Blvd., in Downtown Santa Ana. The event is about making a stand for immigrant rights, workers rights, and human rights for all.
Today’s May Day event in Santa Ana will be hosted by the OC May Day Collective. The Orange County May Day Collective is a community-centered group of individuals committed to organizing the yearly May Day march in Santa Ana. In 2011, the Coalition worked tirelessly to win a more just impound policy in Santa Ana, California. In Orange County, Santa Ana impounds more cars at state-funded drunk-driving checkpoints than any other police agency.
In the late 19th century, May Day was chosen as the date for International Workers’ Day by the Socialists and Communists of the Second International to commemorate the Haymarket affair in Chicago. International Workers’ Day may also be referred to as “May Day”, but it is a different celebration from the traditional May Day, according to Wikipedia.
