Earlier this month, a female suspect used stolen New York State benefit credit cards to make fraudulent purchases at a store in Irvine. It is believed she is part of an international organized crime ring involved in credit card skimming, according to the Irvine Police Department.

Detectives often see that stolen or fraudulently purchased items are then resold for money.

When the suspect was arrested, she was in possession of a “roses” sign, which Irvine police officers frequently see used around Irvine to solicit donations.

Please give with discretion. Over the last few years, more people have been seen holding signs asking for money, selling roses, and playing music for donations. Aggressive panhandling is prohibited by California Penal Code 647(c). In general, asking somebody for money or passively standing and waiting for a handout is legal.

The Irvine Police Department’s Mental Health Outreach Unit is in the community daily, offering resources and help to those in need. MHOU officers find that many people soliciting donations already have large amounts of money. During a recent contact, one woman showed the police officers $4,000 that she had already collected.

Irvine is fortunate to have a caring and generous community. Giving to a reputable organization ensures that your donation will be used to benefit somebody who needs it most.
