On December 29th, 2025, at 9:40 PM, police officers were dispatched to the area of La Palma Avenue and Western Avenue in reference to a male subject needing medical attention after being assaulted by an unknown subject, according to the Buena Park Police Department.

Upon the officers arrival, they located a male victim who was down and in need of medical attention.

The victim was transported to the hospital and later pronounced deceased.

At this time detectives are following up on several leads, and asking anyone with any information regarding this case to contact Det. Kalagian at 714-562-3985. The Case Number is 25-43825.

Penalties faced by the suspect

As of 2026, the specific penalties depend on the final charges filed by the prosecutor: 

Murder (Penal Code 187)

  • First-Degree Murder: This charge applies if the killing was willful, deliberate, and premeditated.
    • Penalty: Typically 25 years to life in state prison.
    • Special Circumstances: If the crime involves factors like a hate crime, the penalty can increase to life without the possibility of parole.
  • Second-Degree Murder: This applies to an unlawful killing with malice but without premeditation.
    • Penalty: Generally 15 years to life in state prison. 

Manslaughter (Penal Code 192)

  • Voluntary Manslaughter: Killing in the “heat of passion” or during a sudden quarrel.
    • Penalty: 3, 6, or 11 years in state prison.
  • Involuntary Manslaughter: Killing through criminal negligence without the intent to kill.
    • Penalty: 2, 3, or 4 years in county jail. 

Aggravated Assault (Penal Code 245)

If the suspect is charged with assault with a deadly weapon (ADW) or force likely to produce great bodily injury, the crime is a “wobbler”. 

  • Felony Penalty: Up to 4 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
  • Misdemeanor Penalty: Up to 1 year in county jail and/or a $1,000 fine. 

Additional Penalties and Enhancements

  • Three Strikes Law: A conviction for murder or voluntary manslaughter counts as a “strike,” which can lead to significantly longer sentences for future offenses.
  • Weapon Enhancements: If a firearm was used, the sentence may be increased by 10, 20, or 25 years to life.
  • Restitution and Fines: Defendants are typically required to pay restitution to the victim’s family and can be fined up to $10,000
