A woman was arrested by the SAPD today after she called the police to report that she had killed her son.

The victim was an 11-year-old boy. He was stabbed multiple times. First reponders found his dead body when they arrived at the La Quinta Inn located at 2721 Hotel Terrace, just west of the 55 Freeway.

The child’s body was found on a bed in a hotel room at around 9:15 a.m.

The mother was transported to a hospital after she ingested an unknown substance, according to the SAPD. She is considered to be in custody and will be moved to the Santa Ana City Jail when the hospital releases her.

The mother is said to be in stable condition.

The names of the victim and suspect were not immediately released.

A knife was recovered by the police officers.

The SAPD’s spokesperson, officer Natalie Garcia, said a motive is unknown.

Garcia said the mother and son are from the Irvine area and have been staying at the hotel off and on for the last couple of weeks.

Garcia also said it appears the boy was stabbed with a knife, which was recovered by police at the scene.

Garcia added that “it’s a very tragic event.”

In California, the penalties for stabbing and killing a child can be severe. Generally, this would be considered first-degree murder, which can result in a sentence of 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

If there are aggravating factors, such as premeditation or cruelty, the death penalty could also be considered.
