Media Advisory: Fitness and Safety Promoted at Walk-to-School Day at Heninger Elementary School on October 3, 2012

Event: Join the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) and its Healthy Eating Active Communities partners Orange County Health Care Agency and Latino Health Access along with the Santa Ana School Police and Santa Ana Police Department as they participate in the annual International Walk to School Day. Educators, parents, students, and community members will take part in this global event to bring awareness to the importance of practicing safe walking, biking, and traffic skills. In addition, participants will review ways to maintain secure routes before, during and after school hours throughout the city of Santa Ana, while promoting physical activity.

Who:

· Santa Ana Unified School District Board of Education

Superintendent Thelma Meléndez de Santa Ana, Ph.D.

· Heninger Elementary School staff, parents and students

· City and county officials

· Partner representatives

· Santa Ana School Police Department and Santa Ana Police Department

When: Wednesday, October 3, 2012

Walk commences at 7:20 a.m., First and Ross Streets

(Or Walnut and Main Streets; Original Mike’s parking lot, if it rains.)

Ceremony begins at 7:50 a.m.

Photo Ops: SAUSD Board Members and Superintendent Dr. Meléndez will begin walking at 7:20 a.m. from First and Ross Streets to Heninger Elementary School. Photographs of Board Members, Superintendent Dr. Meléndez, and students will be available between 7:20 and

7:45 a.m. The Walk to School Ceremony will begin at 7:50 a.m.
