Armed robbery and attempted carjacking at Fashion Island

On 8/26/2024 at 11:26 p.m., the Newport Beach Police Department dispatch center received a call of a robbery where gunshots were possibly fired near Fashion Island, at the 100 block of Newport Center Dr.

The police officers confirmed there was a robbery and located two adult male victims.

Two friends were getting into their cars, a Ferrari and a Rolls Royce, when three men wearing ski masks approached them. One of the victims was robbed of his watch and wallet, according to NBC 4 News.

The suspects then approached a man in a yellow Ferrari and attempted to carjack the vehicle, but the driver sped away, prompting one of the suspects to open fire at the luxury car, shattering a window, according to the L.A. Times.

One of the victims had an injury to his ear possibly from shattered glass from a gunshot at the vehicle. Paramedics responded and treated the victim for his injury.

The suspects were described as three males with ski masks driving a medium sized sedan.

This information is preliminary as this is an active investigation.

If anyone has any information who was not contacted by officers or detectives, please call Detective K. Markwald at (949) 644-3762 or email kmarkwald@nbpd.org.

Condolences for Mrs Patricia McKay

Just last month, 68-year-old Patricia McKay, a tourist from New Zealand, was horifically killed during an attempted robbery at Fashion Island in which three men tried to steal her husband’s Rolex watch before trying to steal her purse, then dragging her into the parking lot where she was run over by a getaway car driven by another suspect.

Clearly it is now open season on wealthy customers at Fashion Island. They are being targeted by criminals who are most likely gang members coming down to Orange County from Los Angeles. A pack of such thugs was arrested in connection with the killing of McKay.
