Property Tax Payment Deadline is next Tuesday!

Orange County Treasurer-Tax Collector Shari Freidenrich today reminds Orange County taxpayers that the second installment of property taxes is due no later than Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Payments not received by Tuesday, unless they have a United States Postal Service stamp on or before April 10, will incur a 10% late penalty fee. Current second installment secured tax receipts are approximately 1% ahead of the same time last year with $38 million more in property taxes being received. Total secured tax receipts are $71 million ahead of the same time same year.

“Almost 50% of property tax payments are now paid electronically and taxpayer payments by eCheck is the fastest growing payment method, increasing almost 30% from the same time last year,” stated Treasurer Freidenrich. “This secure online payment option using your bank account is free to the taxpayer, and is the most cost-effective way for us to process property tax payments. Taxpayers can make payments using this method up to midnight on April 10 by going to bos.ocgov.com/octaxbill or scanning the QR code below.”

Taxpayers can now view and print both their 2010-11 and 2011-12 tax bills online 24/7 using the Treasurer’s website at bos.ocgov.com/octaxbill. Adding this feature to print the prior year’s tax bill is one of the reasons that incoming taxpayer calls have decreased by over 12,000 from the same period last year. Many taxpayers regularly request copies of the prior year tax bills in order to complete their State and Federal income tax returns also due in April and now can view and print these online without having to call us for assistance.

In addition, consider signing up to receive a tax reminder by registering your e-mail with the Treasurer. A reminder e-mail will go out approximately ten days before and again one day prior to the last timely payment date. An e-mail will also go out when the 2012-13 secured tax bills are available online. Just register your e-mail at bos.ocgov.com/taxreminder.

If you pay using your bank’s or other on-line payment site, please make sure the payee is listed as the “County of Orange” and your APN number is exactly as it shows on your tax bill. Payments not received by the Treasurer from your bank by April 10, 2012 will incur a late fee penalty of 10% of the amount due. As it may take several days and possibly up to a week to receive these payments, we encourage you to pay using the Treasurer’s secure online site to avoid a potential penalty.
